Mira Bhayandar: The Navi-Mumbai unit of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested a Bangladeshi couple from a slum in Bhayandar for illegally entering and staying in the country without proper documents.

About The Case

The action is part of a special drive launched by the Maharashtra ATS to identify and deport illegal immigrants. Acting on a tip-off, personnel from the ATS in association with the local police, swooped down on a tenement in Ganesh Deval Nagar, a sprawling slum cluster located in Bhayandar (west) at around 7 am on Tuesday. When enquired, the occupants identified as Mofiz Azom Choudhary (52) and his wife Firoza (47) natives of Madhupur village in Khulna district of Bangladesh failed to produce any legitimate documents to validate their stay in India.

The couple were taken into custody and offences under the relevant sections of the Foreigners Act, 1946, Passport Act, 1950 and Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita was registered against them at the Bhayandar police station. The couple who stayed in the Ghansoli area of Navi Mumbai till 9, January, 2025 had recently moved to a rented accommodation in Bhayandar.

On the virtue of input provided by informants, supported by an electronic surveillance system, the ATS tracked the current location of the couple. Preliminary investigations revealed that the couple had illegally crossed the border with the help of a Bangladeshi agent. The owner of the tenement who provided accommodation to the illegal immigrants is also on the radar of the investigators
