Mumbai: The BMC is considering offering a property tax rebate of up to 2% to housing societies and commercial establishments that install solar panels on their properties. The civic body will also seek necessary permissions from the state government's Urban Development Department if needed.

The BMC's "Clean Society, Green Society" scheme offers rebates to housing societies that adopt green practices. The civic body already offers a 5% rebate for societies processing their wet waste, and an additional 5% for those recycling the dry waste generated within the premises.

Along with waste segregation and composting, the civic body has earlier proposed a 5% rebate on property tax to those housing societies that utilise water from sewage treatment.

In 2006, the state government mandated rainwater harvesting systems in buildings, but many housing societies have ignored this. The Municipal Corporation currently offers a 2% rebate in property tax for societies that implement rainwater harvesting.

Additionally, a similar tax incentive is being proposed for societies that install solar panels, encouraging environmental sustainability, confirmed a civic official.
