Mumbai: The civic authorities have urged the Mumbai Traffic Police to increase vigilance on the Mumbai Coastal Road, especially at the tunnel exits, to curb speeding vehicles. In the meantime, the civic body has fast-tracked the installation of advanced cameras along the coastal road, which will be completed within the next two months.

Since the opening of the south-bound tunnel in March, 50 lakh vehicles have passed through, while the north-bound tunnel, which opened in June, has seen 32 lakh vehicles.

The 10.58-km Coastal Road, stretching from the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, is slated to be fully operational by January 26. An Expression of Interest for developing and maintaining landscaping, gardens, and a 7.5-meter promenade along the road is currently underway.

Advanced cameras will also be installed at critical locations, including tunnel exits. The speed limit on open sections of the coastal road is 80 km/h, while it is 60 km/h inside the tunnels. Currently, 154 cameras monitor vehicle movements inside the tunnels.

The new advanced cameras will automatically capture the registration numbers of speeding vehicles, with an e-challan sent directly to the driver's phone.

"We have received complaints from South Mumbai residents regarding motorists and bikers turning the stretch between the tunnel exit and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link into a racing track. Since the installation of advanced cameras will take another two months, we have written to the Joint Commissioner (Traffic Police) to deploy additional forces to curb speeding vehicles," said a senior civic official.
