Lakhs of people thronged to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (BAMU) Gate on Tuesday to celebrate the 31st Namvistar Divas, marking the name extension of Marathwada University to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. Various events, including lectures by intellectuals and a Bhim Geet Competition, were organized by BAMU on this occasion.
From early morning, people not only from the district but also from various parts of the country gathered to pay homage to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. The renaming movement had a rich history, with several individuals laying down their lives for the cause of renaming the university. The name of the university was officially extended after a long struggle by the people of Marathwada and other parts of the state, from Marathwada University to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. Every year, people gather on January 14 at the university gate to commemorate the occasion and pay tribute to Dr. Ambedkar.
Due to the large gathering, the police administration made traffic adjustments in the city. Roads leading to the university from Begumpura, Cantonment, and Panchakki were closed for all types of private vehicles, with barricades in place. Visitors had to walk from these points to the university gate. Devotees lit candles at the gate and paid respects to the statue of Dr. Ambedkar located there.
The entire university campus and the surrounding areas resembled a fair, with lakhs of people walking along the roads. Stalls selling books, statues, music CDs, and food were set up along the roadside. Platforms by various political and social organizations were also set up, from where leaders delivered speeches. Shiri Jalsas were organized at each podium, where Bhim Geets were performed. The crowds continued to gather at the gate well into the night.
