The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to tighten the screws on Team India players after losing the Border Gavaskar Trophy to Australia after 10 years. Players are likely to pay a heavy price with the board likely to introduce a performance-based variable pay structure for the players.
According to the Indian Express report, the suggestion was given during the meeting with captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
Why is BCCI planning to introduce a performance-based variable pay structure?
As per the report, BCCI is deciding on the move to ensure that players are more “accountable” and, if warranted, face a pay cut based on their performance. The system is said to be formulated along the lines of how corporate houses gives appraisals to their employees annually.
How will the new system effect players
If the performance is not up to the mark, it would impact a player’s earnings. A source while speaking to the publication said, “It was one of the suggestions given that players should be held accountable and if their performance is deemed not fit as per expectations, they should face variable pay-cuts,”
The decision comes a year after BCCI introduced an incentive system for its Test players. As per the system, players who feature in more than 50% of Tests in a season since 2022-23 would receive a financial incentive of ₹30 lakh per game, and the payout will increase to ₹45 lakh per game for every player who plays at least 75% of the matches in a season.
