Laurene Powell Jobs, wife of the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, has embraced the rich traditions of the Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Immersing herself in the sacred atmosphere, she actively participated in significant rituals, including the Pattabhishek ceremony of Vyasanand Giri Maharaj at the Niranjani Akhara, under the guidance of Swami Kailashanand Giri Maharaj.

Laurene Powell Jobs becomes ‘Kamala’

In a symbolic gesture of inclusion and respect, the Niranjani Akhara conferred a Hindu name, ‘Kamala,’ upon Powell. This highlights the welcoming spirit of Indian spirituality and its universal appeal.

What is Pattabhishek?

The Pattabhishek ceremony, an integral part of the Maha Kumbh, is steeped in tradition. This ritual marks the official appointment of saints to key spiritual and administrative roles within their respective Akharas. Saints are honoured with garlands and welcomed with reverence, symbolising their readiness to shoulder responsibilities.

During the Maha Kumbh, hundreds of sadhus and saints undergo this sacred coronation, elevating them to the revered title of 'Mukhiya Mahant'. The process mirrors the coronation of kings, reflecting the significance of their duties in propagating Sanatan Dharma.

Kalpvas: A month-long spiritual discipline

Laurene Powell Jobs is also observing the ancient tradition of Kalpvas, a rigorous spiritual practice that involves living by the banks of the Sangam. For one month, participants dedicate themselves to rituals, meditation, and the pursuit of spiritual growth.

Thirteen major Akharas representing different sects of Sanatan Dharma have established camps at the Maha Kumbh. These camps serve as centers for spiritual discourse, meditation, and rituals, drawing saints, sages, and devotees from all corners of India. The Pattabhishek ceremony, conducted within these Akharas, serves as a focal point for the festival.

The Maha Kumbh’s universal message of unity continues to inspire people from across the globe. Laurene Powell Jobs’ presence at this grand event symbolises the cross-cultural appeal of Indian spiritual practices. By engaging in rituals like the Pattabhishek and Kalpvas, she showcases her genuine admiration for India’s cultural heritage.
