To tackle rising costs and unnecessary expenditure on marriages, the younger generation is shifting toward registered marriages. In Jalgaon district in 2024, 477 marriages were performed in the marriage registration office, Marriage Registration Officer GP Rathod said while talking to The Free Press Journal.
Young people have a mindset to avoid rising costs and unnecessary expenses in marriages, and many feel that the saved money can be useful to them later. Due to this, there is a growing initiative among youth to get married in the marriage registration office in the presence of a few people, saving the cost of marriage ceremonies and food.
The number of registered marriages is increasing every year. In 2017, 374 registered marriages took place, followed by 407 in 2018, 435 in 2019, 373 in 2020, 458 in 2021, 434 in 2022, 279 in 2023, and 477 in 2024.
Registered marriages were given priority due to restrictions during the Covid period. Although registration of marriages slowed down afterwards, they are now increasing again.
Meanwhile, even if a marriage is conducted in a private hall, it must be registered at the marriage registration office or Municipal Corporation to obtain a certificate. Marriage Registration Officer Rathod pointed out that this requirement is not being followed in reality and appealed to couples to register their marriages.
