Raipur: Former Speaker cum Leader of Opposition in Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly Dr Charan Das Mahant wrote a letter to Governor Ramen Deka, requesting him not to approve the Chhattisgarh Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill-2024 and Chhattisgarh Municipalities Bill-2024 terming it as against the spirit of Indian constitution.

In the letter, Dr Mahant raised his serious objection over the bills being passed in the Chhattisgarh Assembly. Coming to his point, the senior Congress leader said that both bills are Chhattisgarh Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill-2024 and Chhattisgarh Municipalities Bill-2024 were passed with voice vote when the main opposition Congress party was absent in Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly on December 19 during the proceedings. As it has a massive impact on the people’s mind-set and their faith in the system, so in that context it must be rejected.

The passage of the Chhattisgarh Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill-2024 and the Chhattisgarh Municipalities Bill-2024 would extend the tenure of existing municipal bodies, potentially violating Article 243 of the Indian Constitution, he said.

This article mandates regular elections to ensure democratic representation and accountability and urged the Governor not to approve these bills. In this context, the ruling government has made clear that it will implement the amendment in the coming January month .
