The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has assured full support to the BEST Undertaking in the future. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the BMC clarified that allegations of neglecting its responsibility towards the BEST or refusing financial assistance are entirely false and appear to be motivated by other interests.

The statement emphasized the vital role of BEST, one of the largest urban bus transportation services in India, in providing a smooth, affordable, and quality public transport experience to Mumbaikars. The BMC reiterated its long-standing commitment to supporting the BEST services, acknowledging the challenges involved in operating such large-scale transportation services.

"The BMC administration fully recognizes the importance of public transport and has consistently provided financial assistance to ensure the smooth functioning of BEST services," the statement read.

Over the past decade, the BMC has extended more than Rs 11,232 crores in financial support to BEST. Between the financial years 2019-20 and 2023-24 alone, the BMC allocated a substantial Rs 8,594.24 crores to the undertaking. For the current financial year, the BMC has earmarked Rs 850 crores for BEST and has also facilitated the procurement of Rs 493 crores for the purchase of electric buses. In addition, Rs 80 crores have been allocated as Diwali bonuses for BEST employees.

"Looking ahead, the BMC is planning to make significant provisions for the upcoming budget, further underscoring its commitment to the public transport system" further read the statement.

"Apart from providing financial support, the BMC has also taken other significant steps. Considering the crucial role of the BEST Undertaking, the BMC has decided to halt the auction of its land at Malabar Hill.

Furthermore, the BMC is making necessary land available as needed. In light of these measures, it would be unfair to claim that the BMC has shirked its responsibility towards the BEST Undertaking" stated that statement.
