Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Unearthing network of cyber criminals and probing cases of digital arrests, cyber cops have found that cyber fraudsters are not making just random calls to dupe people but are specifically choosing their targets.
They are making calls to those having hefty cash as they have knowledge of their bank account details, which they got through data base of salespersons engaged in offering loans and credit cards, police officials said. In majority of digital arrest cases, the victims were high profile including many entrepreneurs, retired officials or in high positions in private sector.
None or very few cases were reported where victims of digital arrest were people from lower income groups, officials informed. Police officials investigating cases of cyber fraud said, gangs involved in cases of digital arrest across the country are working in an organised manner. Gangs of cyber conmen have separate teams who work in coordination to target bank customers.
While, a team works on arranging bank accounts opened in name of labourers, a separate team is engaged to collect database of their possible targets. Investigations indicate that cyber conmen got bank account details of bank customers through individuals engaged in selling loans, credit cards etc on basis of commission.
Through this database, they identify people with hefty cash in their bank accounts and conduct a research of their transactions before calling them for digital arrest, officials added. It is worth mentioning that people often share their bank account details with salespersons offering loans, credit cards etc at public places without enquiring about them.
ACP Cyber Crime Sujeet Tiwari said that people should be careful while sharing details of bank accounts to anyone who is making offers of loans, credit cards, share trading or any other investment as it may fall into the hands of cyber conmen. Moreover, identification documents, photographs and other important documents should also be given only to trusted persons, he added.
