Mumbai: Ravichandran Ashwin’s sudden retirement has opened a can of worms, or so it seems with the Indian spinner’s father suggesting that one of the reasons for his son’s abrupt announcement could be the ‘humiliation’ he faced.

"I too came to know of the retirement at the last minute. There could be many reasons for this. Only Ashwin knows, maybe humiliation," Ravichandran Ashwin’s father told a news outlet. He added that the family was expecting Ashwin to hang up his boots for some time because of this "humiliation.’’

"Nonetheless, the abrupt announcement gave us a shock. How long could he have tolerated all those things? Probably, he would have decided on his own," he said.

Ravichandran Ashwin Tries To Douse The Fire

Ravichandran also said it was Ashwin's call to move away from international cricket. However, Ashwin later tried to douse the fire, saying his father was not "media trained" and his comment should not be taken seriously.

"My father isn't media trained, dey father inneda ithelaam (what's all this, father). I never thought you will follow this rich tradition of 'dad statements'," he quipped after the comment became a viral social media trend. "Request you all to forgive him and leave him alone," Ashwin wrote on X.
