Indians on the move: travel trends of 2024
The most-searched destinations
Travel hotspots for 2024 included India's enchanting city of Mumbai and popular global destinations such as Dubai. Mumbai, known for its vibrant culture and relentless energy, remained the heartbeat of the country. On an international scale, Dubai, with its stunning skyline and iconic Burj Khalifa, emerged as the most searched destination for Indian travellers this year.
Gen Z took over road trips
Gen-Z took the wheel this year—literally! A striking 36% of bus travellers were under the age of 25. From weekend getaways to scenic highways, road trips became a preferred choice for young adventurers seeking freedom and spontaneity.
Record-breaking journeys
The iconic Dibrugarh to Kanyakumari route spanned a staggering 4,189 kilometres, becoming the longest journey undertaken by train this year. For many, it was the ultimate way to experience India’s diversity in a single trip.
Additionally, there was a surge in train bookings during the Holi festival, as families and friends travelled across the country to celebrate together.
Air travel highlights
Independence Day was the peak period for flight bookings, as mid-year getaways soared in popularity. Budget-friendly airfares also made headlines, with Delhi to Gwalior flights available for just ₹1,300.
Meanwhile, destinations like Lakshadweep had a 33% increase in bookings.
Pilgrimage tourism on the rise
India’s spiritual heritage drew in millions of travellers in 2024. Tirupati emerged as the top choice for solace-seekers, while Ayodhya witnessed a 72% surge in visitors.
Travel night owls
Surprisingly, 30% of bookings were made after 8 PM, showing that last-minute plans and night inspiration defined many journeys this year. When was the last time you made a 12 AM plan with your gang?
Visa-free escapes
With easier travel regulations and visa-free access to select destinations, Indians explored the world like never before. Almaty saw a 72% rise in Indian tourists, while Baku’s charm brought an 82% increase. Kenya, too, became a favourite for adventurous travellers, recording a 31% boost in visits.
Concert fever
Concert tourism hit a high note in 2024, with 44% of travellers booking trips to attend music events. From AP Dhillon and Diljit Dosanjh to Dua Lipa and Coldplay (set to perform in January 2025), music lovers ensured every trip had a soundtrack this year. With the concert scene in the country, this trend is set to dominate travel in the upcoming year.
Long weekends and family fun
2024 was the year of long weekends, with a 16% increase in travellers taking extended breaks. Festivals like Chhath Puja and Holi became peak times for travel, as families prioritised togetherness and celebrations over the workaday.
Most unique destinations of the year
For those seeking offbeat adventures, Madagascar’s Antananarivo became an unlikely but enchanting destination. Its unique wildlife and landscapes made it a talking point for travel enthusiasts.
As we prepare to welcome 2025, let’s celebrate the journeys—big and small—that made 2024 unforgettable.
