Mumbai: Mumbaikars need to brace for chilled and foggy mornings this week. Mumbai and the Metropolitan Region have been recording below-normal temperatures this month, giving citizens a good feel of the winter season.
On Wednesday, Mumbai’s Santacruz observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 15.4 degrees Celsius, which is 2.6 degrees Celsius below normal. On Tuesday the observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 15 degrees Celsius, which was 3 degrees Celsius below normal.
While on Monday it recorded a minimum temperature of 14 degrees Celsius, which was as much as 4.5 degrees Celsius below normal temperature in Mumbai.
However, the maximum temperature this week has been around 34-35 degrees Celsius. As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) weekly forecast, the minimum and maximum day temperature will range from 17 degrees Celsius and 33 degrees Celsius. On Thursday, the sky will be foggy and from tomorrow sky will mainly remain clear.
“Due to strong northwesterly winds, a coldwave warning has been given to certain districts of Maharashtra. The extreme weather in the neighbouring districts impacts the city’s climate. Although Mumbai has no warning for coldwave, the chilled, foggy mornings and pleasant days will continue for the next three to four days. There will be no large change in weather conditions,” IMD Mumbai Director Sunil Kamble said.
This month has been one of the pleasant December months in Mumbai, especially due to the chilled mornings. On December 9, the city woke up to a minimum temperature of 13.7 degrees Celsius, which was the lowest December temperature of the last nine years. While the 14 degrees of minimum temperature recorded on Monday was the second lowest for this season.
The lowest December temperature recorded in Mumbai was on December 20, 1949, at 10.6 degrees Celsius. The second December lowest was in 2011 and 2015 at 11.4 degrees Celsius.
