Dhar (Madhya Pradesh): The tribal welfare department in Dhar district has been grappling with a severe crisis since September this year, following the suspension of Brajkant Shukla, the assistant commissioner. Despite the passage of over three months, the crucial position remains vacant, causing administrative chaos and neglect in managing funds meant for the welfare of tribal children.
In September, the district was allocated a significant budget of Rs 1.23 crore for essential supplies, including school uniforms, books, toiletries, blankets, quilts, and other necessities for students in Girls School-cum-Residential Schools. However, as of mid-December, none of the allocated funds have been spent, and no purchases have been made.
With winter in full swing, students are left without basic provisions, such as blankets and quilts, and many are struggling in the severe cold. The situation has led to frustration and concern among the affected communities. Free Press raised this issue, highlighting the alarming lack of oversight by the district administration.
Currently, the temporary charge of the assistant commissioner role has been given to Abhishek Chaudhary, the district panchayat CEO. However, under his supervision, no corrective action has been taken, worsening the crisis. In an attempt to take action, Brijesh Pandey, the deputy commissioner, suspended clerk Rajesh Malviya for his negligence.
Despite this, the situation remains unresolved. In a more significant move, Shriman Shukla, the commissioner of the tribal affairs department, recently suspended assistant director Satish Singh in a bid to bring accountability to the situation.
The government’s commitment to the welfare of tribal children has been called into question, as the cold persists and exams approach. Students continue to suffer due to bureaucratic indifference at the district level.
