The Philippine government authorised the third and last round of changes to the Philippine Medical Act, which allowed foreigners to practise medicine in the country.

What is the new amendment

The Philippines' recent Medical Act modification, which addresses the rising demand for top-notch medical education among Indian candidates, provides Indian students with a clear route to practicing medicine in the country. The reform responds to the growing desire of Indian students for reasonably priced, internationally accepted medical education.

The long-standing Medical Act of 1959 has been replaced by the new law, which was approved by the House of Representatives 184-3-0. It brings about significant reforms, such as the establishment of the Professional Regulatory Board of Medicine and the Medical Education Council. These establishments seek to improve academic standards, encourage moral behaviour, and guarantee that the Philippines maintains its position as a leader in international medical education.

Indian students graduating from CHED-accredited colleges, upon completing their internships, can now register and practice medicine in the Philippines. Their qualifications will also align with Indian Medical Commission standards, providing seamless pathways to practice in India or even globally.

Speaking about this transformative initiative, Mr. Kadwin Pillai, Managing Director of Transworld Educare and Director of Kings International Medical Academy, remarked, “This reform is not just a milestone for the Philippines but also an indication to the country’s commitment to strengthening its educational ties with India.”

Around 2,000 Indian students choose the Philippines each year for their medical studies. Every year, thousands of applicants are drawn to the Philippines for its reasonably priced tuition, US-aligned curriculum, and English-based education. With 64 authorised medical schools and internationally renowned residency programs, the Philippines provides a unique blend of high-quality education and reasonably priced tuition.
