After losing the Ballond'or to Rodri just two months ago, Real Madrid’s Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior won the 2024 FIFA Best Men’s Player of the Year award during the FIFA awards ceremony in Doha on Tuesday. In the women's category Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmati won the Women’s Player of the Year award for a second year running.
Vinicius won the men’s player of the year award with 48 votes, while Rodri finished second with 43 votes. Vinicius's Madrid teammate Jude Bellingham finished third with 37 votes. The Brazilian ended the last season with 24 goals in 39 matches in all competitions, while also providing nine assists.
Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho, who scored a stunning overhead goal against Everton in the Premier League last season, won the Puskas award. Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti won the men’s Coach of the Year award after having guided Los Blancos to the Spanish La Liga and the UEFA Champions League titles.
Bonnati, Hayes win accolade in women's category
Bonmati, on the other hand, scored 19 goals and provided 18 assists in 41 matches for Barcelona in the 2023-24 season. Emma Hayes, the current head coach of the USA women’s team and former Chelsea women’s team manager, won the Women’s Coach of the Year award. She won the Women’s Super League with Chelsea this year before guiding USA to an Olympic gold medal in Paris.
