Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A five-day ‘Bhopal Potters Market 2024’ inaugurated with an exhibition of star exhibitors including Kavita Pandya from Anand (Ahmedabad), Lekha Bhagat from New Delhi and Devyani Smith from Mumbai at Gauhar Mahal here on Thursday.
They have displayed their gas firing ceramics artworks including sculptures, functional table wares and vases which attracted art lovers who were gathered in good numbers. Kavita has showcased Gauahar Mahal on ‘Nerikomi,’ a Japanese pottery technique that involves stacking and cutting colored clay to create patterns.
She made the artworks just by seeing previous photographs and videos of the Potters Market on the internet as she didn’t visit the place earlier. Her other work ‘Samundra Manthan’ is also on display. “ For the past 10 years, I've embraced the Nerikomi technique, which has become a language through which I clearly express myself,” Pandya said. Table wares, vases and a centerpiece have been displayed by Devyani. She used 24 carat gold in black colour for the centerpiece. She made the table wares in a scratch pattern.
Her work captures beauty at the edge of nothingness-beauty that begins from or ends at it. 71-year-old Lekha has showcased some glazed functional table wares in bamboo brush stroke and Kadi Patta design. “Much of my journey with clay is connected to eminent ceramist Sardar Gurcharan Singh ji who was my teacher of much more than clay. I spent 10 years working in Garhi Studios, Delhi and have had my own studio since 2001,” she said. Around 50 potters from all over the country will showcase their artworks in the event on Friday.
