Mumbai: A domestic help accused of committing over 50 thefts has been arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch. The accused, identified as Vanita alias Asha Shailendra Gaikwad, would work as a maid in affluent households and within a week, steal cash and valuables before fleeing.
According to the Crime Branch, Vanita has over 50 cases of theft registered against her in Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai. Investigations revealed that she amassed crores of rupees through her crimes and frequently changed her residence to avoid being traced.
About The Latest Theft
In her latest incident, Vanita joined the household of 59-year-old Zakir Ahmedbaba Mate in Vashi Sector 9 as a maid. Within four days, she fled after stealing jewelry and cash worth ₹3.5 lakh. A theft case was registered against her at Vashi Police Station.
Acting on a tip-off, Mumbai Crime Branch Unit 7 learned that Vanita was hiding in Mahul Gaon, Chembur, at the RCF Mhada Colony. A team led by Inspector Atmaji Sawant, with Sub-Inspector Kale and others, laid a trap and arrested her. During questioning, Vanita confessed to the theft in Vashi.
Method of Operation
Vanita Gaikwad would target upscale residential areas in Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai, introducing herself under different names. She would build rapport with watchmen and inquire about households looking for maids. Once employed, she would work diligently for a few days to map out the valuables in the house. At the first opportunity, she would steal cash and valuables and flee. To avoid detection, she frequently changed her name and provided false addresses, making it difficult for the police to track her down. Police are continuing their investigation into her extensive criminal activities.
