The new year in Gujrat begins with the onset of Diwali. The much awaited festival of Gujrat, the Runn Utsav begins just after Diwali. This year, while Rann Utsav kicked off on November 11, a unique attraction has already begun drawing attention: the Dholavira Tent City in Kutch. Built with a theme inspired by the Harappan civilisation (Mohenjo-Daro), this eco-friendly tent city offers visitors a chance to stay at the heart of history in a setting that beautifully combines ancient culture with modern luxury.
A unique stay in a historic location
Located in Dholavira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the tent city is operational from November and will continue welcoming guests until March 15. The site has been designed with minimum environmental impact. If you look at it from far away, it resembles a grand fort. Its theme pays homage to the 5,000-year-old Harappan civilisation, showcasing the ancient history of Dholavira.
For the first time, tourists heading to the Rann Utsav can visit Dholavira and stay there, experiencing the historic site up close.
Inside the tent city
The Dholavira Tent City, built by Evoke Company, offers several standout features:
140 Luxurious Tents: The city includes tents categorized as Darbari and Rajwadi, offering a royal experience.
Artistic Design: Local artisans have carved artworks showcasing the vibrant culture and ancient heritage of Kutch.
Cultural Performances: Folk artists perform traditional music and dance inside the tent city, providing guests with a rich cultural experience.
Blend of Ancient and Modern: While the theme reflects the Indus Valley civilization, modern amenities ensure a comfortable stay.
Tourists travel to Dholavira via the scenic ‘Road to Heaven’ in Kutch, making the journey as memorable as the destination itself.
Tent city's focus on promoting ancient civilisation
Amit Gupta, manager of the tent city, highlights its deeper purpose: “The main purpose of building the tent city is to promote Dholavira so that this ancient city and ancient civilization located in the remote area of Kutch is being showcased more.”
The initiative aligns with the recognition of Dholavira as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in July 2021. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, celebrating the announcement, shared his connection to Dholavira, recalling his visits during school days and later as Chief Minister of Gujarat.
