The incidents of suicide at railway stations under the Pune Division are increasing. According to official data, the Pune Division registered a total of 110 suicidal cases, including four cases at Pune Railway Station, over the past four years. In the first ten months of 2024 alone, 50 people have lost their lives. Three cases were registered in 2021, 27 cases in 2022 and 30 cases in 2023.
In a recent incident, a 50-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, both from Kalburgi district in Karnataka, died by suicide by jumping in front of a train at Pune Railway Station on October 22. The incident occurred on the track near platform number four around 7:30am. The two suddenly jumped in front of a moving train and were killed instantly.
In another case, 27-year-old Rishikesh Jaidev Mhasare took his own life by jumping in front of a moving train at Khadki Railway Station on June 9 after a dispute with money lenders. The incident came to light when his relatives filed an FIR at Bibwewadi Police Station.
Speaking to The Free Press Journal, Ram Paul Barpagga, PRO of Central Railway, Pune Division, said, "Important railway stations like Daund, Miraj, Solapur, Kolhapur and Ahmednagar come under the Pune Division and are under the protection of railway police. To monitor the railway stations, 1,840 new CCTV cameras, including 58 for Pune Railway Station, have been sanctioned and will be installed soon. Currently, a total of 320 CCTV cameras are in active mode, including 75 at Pune Railway Station."
Priyanka Sharma, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner of Pune Division, Central Railway, said, "To prevent suicide attempts, the administration has constructed boundary walls in required areas of the railway station. Multiple warning boards and trespassing posters have been installed. Train drivers have also been trained to sound a whistle at specific spots. Moreover, the administration is running awareness programs regularly to prevent such incidents."
