Chandigarh: Punjab police on Wednesday claimed to have nabbed two members of Lawrence Bishnoi gang following a shootout on the outskirts of Jalandhar cantonment and recovered three weapons along with magazines and cartridges from their possession.

Elaborating on the incident, Commissioner of Police (CP), Jalandhar, Swapan Sharma said the accused have been identified as Harinder Singh alias Hinda and Sukhmanjit Singh alias Sukhman of New Deol Nagar, both in Jalandhar.

CP Sharma said that following disclosures of arrested accused persons, police teams were taking both the accused persons to a desolated place at the outskirts of the Jalandhar cantonment, where they claimed to have concealed arms and ammunition.

However, during the recovery operation, accused Sukhmanjit Singh opened fire at the police teams, prompting retaliatory action during which he sustained injuries in the exchange of fire," he said, while adding that at least 13 rounds of fires were exchanged during the encounter and subsequently admitted to a local hospital.

The CP held that both the accused were involved in several heinous crimes, including extortion, murder, Arms Act and NDPS Act.

Meanwhile, in another operation, the police claimed to have arrested two operatives of Davinder Bambiha Gang and recovered two .32 calibre pistols along with seven cartridges from their possession.

Stating that the have been identified as Harinder Singh and Gurjinder Singh, both residents of SAS Nagar (Mohali), the police said that the accused were handled by USA-based Kulveer Singh alias Lala Benipal, an aide of absconding foreign-based gangster Lucky Patial. Accused Lala Benipal had earlier orchestrated two separate attacks in SAS Nagar, including one on a financier in September 2023 and another on a rival gang member in December 2023, he added.
