DIMAPUR — Chen Wetnyu village was declared the first tobacco-free village in Mon district during the District Level Coordination Committee (DLCC) meeting under the National Tobacco Control Programme, held at the DC conference hall on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Esther Chophy Ngullie, District Nodal Officer of the National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP), stated that it was the only village to meet the criteria outlined in the tobacco-free village guidelines, according to a DIPR report. Additionally, 10 schools from Tizit and 9 schools from Wakching were declared tobacco-free schools. ADC Mon, Pakon Phom, in his speech, encouraged the village council and schools to maintain their tobacco-free status. He also announced that enforcement squads would soon be formed in Tobu, Naginimora, Chen, and Wakching. The chairman of Chen Wetnyu village stated that since 1961, the sale of intoxicants such as drugs, alcohol, and tobacco has been banned within the village. Tajber Singh, principal of PM Shri JNV Wakching, remarked that awareness programs are the first step in the fight against intoxicating substances.
