DIMAPUR — As part of the Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas celebration and IEC campaign for Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DAJ-GUA), ICFAI University Nagaland (IUN) organised a state level debate competition on the topic NLTP Act 1989 at ICFAI University campus, Chümoukedima, on Monday. Addressing the gathering Joint Secretary, Tribal Affairs Department, Hito Sema highlighted the aims and objectives of the Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas celebration and IEC Campaign, a DIPR report stated. Students from various educational institutions who participated in the debate included Toli K Jimo, Tshekukhro-u Akami, Yantsumong J Yimchunger, Pekivi K Kiho, Grace Zhimomi and Engenmendang Jamir. The winner of the debate, Pekivi K Kiho of Patkai Christian College, who spoke against the motion, acknowledged the intention of the NLTP Act 1989 as noble, but argued that “the society that we are living today is not the one where we can say the act has fulfiled its purpose, therefore, we must confront the truth that the NLTP Act has not succeeded its primary objective.” According to Kiho, the NLTP Act only encouraged corruption and syndicate suppliers, and that consumption of adulterated alcohol have destroyed the people. “The word dry state exists only in paper but in reality we...
