Guwahati, Mar 20: Assam Police could be quite enthusiastic in flaunting its crime investigation records, but the ground reality doesn't paint that rosy picture, particularly when the common people are at the receiving end!

Such a care-a-damn attitude on the part of the men in khakis was once again evident when miscreants had attempted a burglary at an apartment in the Bhagaduttapur area of Beltola in the wee hours of March 17. The miscreants apparently entered the premises by climbing the rear wall. They cut the concealed wires on the second floor, snapping power supply to that part of the apartment. Downstairs, the miscreants also cut the CCTV wires. Available CCTV footage showed two masked men, wearing turbans and spectacles, as they approached the CCTVs to disconnect them.

"Apparently, their motive was to break into one of the apartments, but probably they sensed that some neighbours had woken up, and so they fled," one of the residents said.

The FIR was lodged at Dispur police station within a few hours of the development, with a request to inspect the crime scene before the residents could repair the damaged wires.

But even after three days, police have not visited the apartment for reasons best known to them.

"We waited for two days, but police have not visited the area. We had no option but to repair the wires. Of course, we have kept photographs of the damaged wires," one of the residents said.

Sources said there have been many such incidents of house break-ins in the Beltola area, but police have allegedly maintained a lackadaisical approach.

Residents complained that despite the incidents, there have been no patrolling or enhanced security measures in the area.
