Deputy Commissioner Amarjit Singh paid his tributes to the eight soldiers of the district who sacrificed their lives in the Kargil War.

Paying his tributes to the martyrs at a Kargil Vijay Diwas event here today at Martyr Capt Mridul Sharma War Memorial, he said overall, 527 soldiers sacrificed their lives in the Kargil War, which took place 26 years ago in the tough, mountainous terrain of Jammu and Kashmir.

The saga written during the war remained fresh in the hearts of the people of the country, he added. He said 52 of the martyrs were from the state and two Param Vir Chakras, the highest gallantry award, were given to soldiers of the state. He noted that eight soldiers of the district sacrificed their lives in Kargil War — Martyr Havildar Kashmir Singh of Uhal village; Martyr Havildar Raj Kumar of Baglu village; Martyr Sepoy Dinesh Kumar of Andral village; Martyr Rifleman Deep Chand of Baroti village; Martyr Havildar Swami Das Chandel of Samlehra village; Martyr Rifleman Praveen Kumar of Khalawat village; Martyr Rifleman Sunil Kumar of Tyankar village; and Martyr Sepoy Rakesh Kumar of Kach Palahi village. The DC honoured family members of martyrs on the occasion. A police contingent conducted a march past at the war memorial. SP Bhagat Singh Thakur and Deputy Director, Sanik Welfare Department, Sq Ldr Manoj Rana (retd) were among those present at the event.
