Home bred contract manufacturer Dixon Technologies Friday said it has entered into an agreement with Taiwanese original design maker Compal Electronics to make Google Pixel devices in India, as the US major strives to gain a foothold in the world’s second largest smartphone market.Dixon becomes the second contract manufacturer for Google who had started making Pixel phones locally with Foxconn subsidiary Wow Tech at their Chennai facility. “This is a significant opportunity for Dixon and marks an exciting step in our growth and commitment to delivering cutting edge, high quality products to the global and domestic market,” Atul B. Lall, Vice Chairman of Dixon Technologies said in a notice to the stock exchanges.“Through this launch, Dixon shall be leveraging its state of the art facilities, effective manufacturing techniques and workforce and this also highlights the immense potential of India’s electronics manufacturing sector in the global scenario,” he added. The company, in the exchange filing, said its wholly owned subsidiary Padget Electronics will be making the high-end smartphones at its manufacturing facility in Noida. Dixon had earlier signed a pact with Compal technologies. The Taiwanese company is a manufacturing partner for Google products globally.Google’s Pixel phones compete in the fast-growing premium segment in India. Its market share is less than 1% in India as of Q3 2024, according to market trackers, which is expected to grow three times by 2025 driven by aggressive channel expansion and strong consumer interest in generative AI.With Pixel phones in its bouquet, Dixon is now making smartphones for nearly every major smartphone brand in India, except for Apple. Earlier this year, Lall had said the company is producing smartphones for four of the top five smartphone brands in India. Making Pixel phones will now help Dixon position itself as a high-end smartphone manufacturer, experts said. ET had earlier reported that Dixon will be making around 100,000 units of Pixel phones per month, with 25-30% of those to be exported to other countries. The development comes after Google announced in August that it has started shipping locally-made Pixel smartphones from India, starting with the Google Pixel 8. The technology giant would earlier make the majority of its smartphones in Asian countries like Vietnam and China. In 2023, Google’s senior vice president Rick Osterloh had said the company is partnering with both global and local contract manufacturers to produce Pixel phones in India.
