WIGAN recorded another big win on their return from Las Vegas as the Betfred Super League champions came from behind to beat Huddersfield 44-18 at the Brick Community Stadium.
Eight days on from defeating Warrington 48-24 in the first Super League match to take place in the United States, Wigan, who had landed back in Britain on Tuesday night, trailed early on to Adam Swift’s try and subsequently went in at the break 18-10 down.
But Matt Peet’s men then took control in the second half, crossing six times, including a second try of the match for skipper Liam Farrell, as they secured a third-successive win after their opening round golden-point loss to Leigh.
The 2024 quadruple winners, who move up a place to fourth, have scored eight tries in each of those victories.
For Luke Robinson’s 11th-placed Huddersfield, meanwhile, it was a fourth defeat from as many outings.
As Wigan made a slow start, the visitors grabbed an early lead when Swift dived over in the corner in the fifth minute.
The hosts hit back in the 13th when Zach Eckersley did well on the right before offloading to Farrell, who scored close to the posts.
Eckersley then went over himself, the ball worked to him via Bevan French and Adam Keighran on the last tackle, to put Wigan in front on the half hour, although Keighran missed with his conversion attempt.
Huddersfield responded in impression fashion, edging ahead again after Sam Hewitt crossed and adding another try in the final moments of the first half. George Flanagan — a late replacement in the starting line-up for Tui Lolohea, having been 18th man — crashed over.
Wigan looked full of purpose after emerging for the second half and a successful captain’s challenge in the opening stages led to an attack that concluded with Farrell grounding the bouncing ball, the try confirmed as the video referee opted not to overturn Liam Moore’s on-field decision.
Peet’s men subsequently got back in front in the 50th minute with the ball being moved quickly along the line and Liam Marshall finishing in the corner and, 10 minutes later, they had try number five as French got through a mass of bodies to bundle over.
Three successive efforts were then ruled as no try after video checks, Harvie Hill and Kruise Leeming being denied for Wigan and Swift for Huddersfield, before the hosts’ lead was then boosted by Jake Wardle in the 74th minute.
Further late tries followed from Jai Field and Leeming as Wigan wrapped things up, with Keighran taking his contribution to six successful kicks.
