WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Rangers conceded their first goal of the season but romped to a 6-1 win over Spartans and remain top of the Scottish Women’s Premier League on goal difference from Hearts, 3-0 winners over Aberdeen, and Glasgow City, who earned a 1-0 victory at Motherwell.

Montrose needed a stoppage time winner to edge out bottom club Dundee United 2-1, Celtic won 3-0 at Partick and Hibs thumped Queen’s Park 6-1.

MEN’S CYCLING: Belgium’s Tim Merlier won Sunday’s European road race championship in a bunch sprint finish that saw the first 31 riders all finish with the same time.

Netherlands’ Olav Kooij was second, with Estonia’s Madis Mikhels holding off Jasper Philipsen to finish third. The Dutch team finished top of the championship medals table with six golds in their eleven medal haul, followed by Italy and Belgium with five medals each.

SPEEDWAY: Norwich-born Robert Lambert rode to victory in Denmark on Sunday and claimed his first ever Grand Prix event win but Poland’s Bartosz Zmarzlik’s second place was enough to see him crowned world champion for the fifth time in six years.

With just the Polish Grand Prix in Torun to race Lambert is 10 points clear of last year’s runner-up Fredrik Lindgren in the hunt for the silver medal.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: As the new Champions League format kicks off with Aston Villa’s visit to the Young Boys of Bern, the third round of England’s League Cup fights for attention, with 1972’s winners Stoke up against Fleetwood and six-time champions Manchester United hosting Barnsley.

Brentford meet Leyton Orient, 1991’s winners Sheffield Wednesday are at Blackpool, Everton face Southampton, Crystal Palace visit QPR and Preston play Fulham.
