The annual "Santa's Big Visit" event in Hemyock has once again brought festive cheer to the community. Speaking about the event's success, organiser Lydia Poole was thankful for the dry weather, a stark contrast to the rain-soaked visit of the previous year.“This year’s Big Visit has gone really well,” she said. “We’ve had a good turnout, and I think it’s helped that it hasn’t been raining this year because last year was very soggy. We’ve had a great turnout from everyone. It’s been really lovely.”The event, which features multiple stops around the village, saw enthusiastic support from residents. Lydia said: “All of our stops have been pretty busy, and we’ve been really well supported.” The proceeds from the event will benefit two notable charities: the Devon Air Ambulance and the Grand Appeal for Bristol Children’s Hospital.Having started in 2018, the Big Visit has become a beloved tradition in the community. Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the organisers adapted by holding socially distanced meet-and-greets with Father Christmas. Reflecting on the journey so far, Lydia added: “We have raised in excess of about £5,500 pounds over that time.“What keeps us doing it is the children’s faces,” she said. “Some of the children just absolutely light up when they see the snow, and that makes it all worth it, as well as the fact that we’re giving to great causes.” To add to the festive spirit, children visiting Santa were treated to hot chocolate and sweets.
