Some things never seem to get old. Such as the creeping unease of outsiders left to fend for themselves in a remote, insular community where the lifestyle hasn’t changed for generations and, under a veneer of Christianity, the old ways are still practised. It’s far from an original idea, but when done well it’s still a reliable source of nail-biting tension, and Laura McCluskey’s debut, The Wolf Tree, hits all the right notes.
