The year in polling 2024 has been a remarkable year for elections, with voters heading to the polls in more than 60 countries around the world. There has been more information available to voters to help them make up their minds than ever before. But in an era of political disruption and rapid technological progress, including the rise of Generative AI, there has also been much more misinformation, making it trickier than ever for the electorate to tell true from false. Political polls help to tell the story of election campaigns and provide important evidence for political parties and the public alike on how voters are leaning, as well as their views and concerns. 2024 was a bumper year for polls, both in Scotland and around the world. July’s General Election saw the number of Scotland polls more than triple compared with the previous General Election in 2019. The sheer number of polls – both traditional opinion polls and the newer kid on the block, MRPs – provided valuable evidence but also risked overwhelm at times during the campaign.
