Hartlepool United bolstered their play-off credentials following an impressive win over in-form Oldham Athletic on New Year's Day. The Latics arrived in the North East on a run of eight league games without defeat but proved no match for Pools, who dominated large parts of the contest. Gary Madine, starting his first league game since early October, missed a gilt-edged chance to put the hosts in front before Josh Lundstram fired Oldham into the lead with a stunning first-time volley from distance, surely one of the goals of the season. However, Pools responded well and levelled through skipper Luke Waterfall, who headed home his first goal of the campaign in the 39th minute. Anthony Mancini, who had caused the Latics back line all sorts of problems, rounded off a magnificent individual display with the winning goal, lashing home the decisive strike after Oldham failed to deal with David Ferguson's threatening ball into the box. It was a memorable afternoon for Pools, who moved to within three points of the play-off places. Here are 10 key takeaways from New Year's Day.
