Attack on Ukrainian capital lasts eight hours with five districts hit and high-rise building set on fire

Russia has carried out a massive drone attack on Kyiv, hours after Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election on Wednesday, and as the Kremlin called on the west to stop backing the Ukrainian government in order to save its people.

The moped-like whine of Iranian shahed drones could be heard at 6am local time above the Ukrainian capital. There was machine gunfire in the centre of Kyiv and explosions as air defence tried to shoot the missiles down. The attack lasted eight hours.
