The boom in women’s sport has brought fame and fortune to a swathe of female athletes, but the increased exposure, escalating pressures and sheer demand for time has forced a growing number to step away from the spotlight and seek help with their mental health.

Matildas forward Mary Fowler is the latest athlete to take time out in order to address mental and physical fatigue, after she withdrew from Australia’s squad for the upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Taiwan.
