Tanko Yunusa, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, has disclosed that the Labour Party's former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has come forward to fulfil the bail conditions for the release of human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi.
Farotimi, who is facing charges of defamation preferred against him by Aare Afe Babalola over claims in his controversial book, ‘Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System,’ was granted bail on Friday, December 20, 2024.
The bail was granted on certain conditions, including a N30m bond, two sureties (one of whom must own a house), surrendering his passport, and refraining from granting media interviews.
Meanwhile, in a statement posted on his X on Friday, Tanko said Obi had sought the resolution of the matter in a way that respects legal processes and benefits everyone involved.
He explained that Obi's demand aligns with his character as a proponent of the rule of law.
“I consulted His Excellency, Peter Obi, as the leader of the Obidient Movement. As a respecter of the rule of law, due process, and order, he offered to take Dele Farotimi on the bail conditions,” Yunusa stated.
“His concern is that the situation be resolved in the best interest of all parties and our legal system. He extended his sincere appreciation to all concerned,” he said.
According to Tanko, Obi also thanked the Nigerian courts and all concerned on the Farotimi matter.
Apart from the case in Ekiti, Farotimi is also facing lawsuits in other jurisdictions, including Oyo and the FCT as individuals affected by the claims in his book sought litigation.
