Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has mourned the passing
of Ayo Adebanjo, the factional leader of Afenifere.
The elder statesman died on Friday at his residence in
Lekki, Lagos, at age 96.
Atiku described Adebanjo as a “formidable force and a
fearless fighter” who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s transition to
democracy.
The former vice-president praised the deceased for his
unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and good governance, adding that he
was one of the last remaining nationalists who dedicated his life to the
progress of the country.
“I am saddened by the news of the passing away of Chief Ayo
Adebanjo, a foremost elder statesman and one of the few remaining nationalists
of our country,” he said.
“I can vividly recall the heroic role that Pa Adebanjo
played in wresting power from the military and enthroning democratic governance
in Nigeria. He was at the forefront of the fight against military
dictatorship.”
Atiku acknowledged Adebanjo’s fight for justice and
equality, saying he inspired multiple generations, mentored civil rights
advocates, and fought oppression until his final days.
“It is on record that Pa Adebanjo spent his entire youthful
days fighting against colonial rule; spent his middle age to fight against
military dictatorship and his latter days to ensure that good governance, rule
of law and democracy took firm roots in Nigeria,” he said.
“I wish to state without equivocation that Pa Adebanjo was a
golden example of how to live and die for the good of the country.
“Apart from mentoring many generations of civil rights
activists across different generations, Pa Adebanjo was an activist
extraordinaire and bridge builder who led the battle against injustice and
oppression from the trenches
“Undoubtedly, the life and times of Adebanjo remain a
priceless map for contemporary and upcoming activists, who advocate for good
governance to learn and take a cue from.
“He taught all of us how to be statesmen of distinction.”
The former vice-president also condoled with the Adebanjo
family and Ogun state, urging them to find solace in his legacy.
OBI: ADEBANJO SHAPED MY PERCEPTION OF NIGERIA
In his tribute, Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of
the Labour Party (LP), said Adebanjo was one of the great minds who shaped his
perception of Nigeria as a great country.
The former Anambra governor described Adebanjo as a pillar
in the struggle for a new Nigeria, calling his death “a profound loss to
Nigeria and to all who cherish justice, equity, and truth”.
“I remain deeply grateful for his support during my
presidential campaign. His endorsement was not merely a political gesture but a
testament to his belief in the ideals of equity and inclusiveness,” he said.
“He stood firm in his convictions against all odds,
demonstrating his dedication to the greater good of Nigeria.
“The last time I spoke with him, his words left a lasting
impression: “Always stand on the path of justice.”
“That advice remains a guiding principle in my life, and I
reaffirm my commitment to upholding it in honour of his memory.
“In my association with Pa Adebanjo, I come to appreciate
Nelson Mandela’s words, “I like friends who have independent minds because they
tend to make you see problems from all angles.”
The former governor asked Nigerians to celebrate Adebanjo’s
life of service and uphold his values.
FAYEMI: ADEBANJO WAS
COMMITTED TO DEMOCRATIC IDEALS
In a condolence message, Kayode Fayemi, former governor of
Ekiti state, described the deceased as a man who spent his life committed to
fairness and democratic ideals in the face of adversity.
The ex-governor said the demise was a great loss not only to
the Yoruba nation but to Nigeria as a whole.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo,
foremost nationalist and leader of Afenifere,” Fayemi said.
“This is a great loss not only for the Yoruba nation but for
Nigeria as a whole. Pa Adebanjo was a true icon of Nigeria’s democratic
struggle, an unwavering advocate of justice, and a pillar of progressive
politics in Nigeria.
“Baba was more than a political leader; he was a moral
compass who never wavered in his convictions.
“As a committed nationalist and a leading voice in
Afenifere, he stood for fairness, justice and the restructuring of Nigeria to
ensure a more equitable society.
“His principled courage, wisdom, and steadfastness in
speaking truth to power made him an enduring figure in our national political
landscape.
“While we grieve his loss, we also celebrate a well-lived
life dedicated to pursuing a better Nigeria.
“His legacy will remain an inspiration for those of us who
believe in the principles he championed.”
Fayemi also extended his condolences to Adebanjo’s family,
the Afenifere leadership, and all Nigerians who are beneficiaries of his
leadership and goodwill.
