Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has said he would have gotten a third term in office if he wanted.

Obasanjo said his decision not to run for a third term was because he never wanted it.

Speaking with News Central TV on Thursday, the former president said some ex-governors in his administration also wanted a third term.

He said the governors were waiting for him to make the first move before they pushed for their third term ambition.

According to Obasanjo: “If I had wanted a third term, I would have gotten it. I didn’t want a third term. I know some governors working for this, believing that if I, as president, got a third, they would also get it.”

There were claims that Obasanjo nursed a third-term ambition while in office from 1999 to 2007 when he handed over to the Musa Yar’Adua.

There were claims that Obasanjo attempted to bribe the National Assembly with millions of naira, which eventually failed.

Although his move for a third term failed following widespread rejection by Nigerians, the former President has continued to deny all insinuations that he ever nursed that ambition.
