How Nigerian, Olusegun Jimoh is pioneering solutions for global hearing loss
Olusegun Jimoh’s journey from Nigeria to becoming a leading figure in pharmacology and neuroscience exemplifies resilience, innovation, and a commitment to global health. His work in developing therapeutic strategies for hearing loss and balance disorders offers hope to millions affected by auditory impairments worldwide.
After earning a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Olusegun honed his clinical skills during an internship at University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, Nigeria's premier teaching hospital. He gained further experience in community pharmacies before pursuing a PhD in pharmacology and neuroscience at Southern Illinois University (SIU), USA.
At SIU, Olusegun has emerged as a leading researcher in hearing loss. His studies focus on regenerating cochlear and vestibular hair cells to address sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and balance disorders, conditions that affect millions globally. Current treatments, such as hearing aids and cochlear implants, manage symptoms but do not address the underlying cause: the permanent loss of delicate cochlear hair cells. Olusegun's innovative approach combines gene therapy and pharmacological agents to regenerate these cells, offering hope for a biological cure.
Olusegun’s work extends beyond the laboratory. In Nigeria, he founded the "Operation Check Yourself Program," providing free blood pressure and glucose screenings, along with health counseling. This initiative has significantly improved community health awareness and outcomes.
His dedication has earned him recognition, including an NIH scholarship to attend a prestigious workshop at The Jackson Laboratory and a nomination for the Willis Swartz Award by SIU’s Department of Pharmacology and Neuroscience.
Olusegun’s research is advancing scientific understanding of auditory impairments, with the potential to revolutionize treatments and improve the quality of life for those affected. Looking ahead, he aims to expand his impact by exploring sustainable medical solutions and optimizing therapies for auditory health, ensuring his work contributes to a healthier and more sustainable future for all.
