The scene of the incident as of 18 January. The 60,000-litre petrol-laden tanker, with registration number KBG-103-XAX, was heading to Gwagwalada in the Federal Capital Territory from Lagos when it detached from its head. The drivers and members of some regulatory agencies brought another tanker to evacuate the fuel using a pumping machine. Some residents also trooped in to scoop up the spilling fuel when the tanker exploded into a ball of flames. / PHOTO: Yakubu Mohammed

While the authorities pointed fingers at residents for igniting the fire as they tried to scoop up spilling fuel, the former blamed it on hardship.
