The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has denied reports of merger talks with the Labour Party (LP) ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating that while the LP is welcome to join, no such discussions have taken place.

The party has also announced amendments to its constitution to allow more Nigerians to contest elections under its platform without the previous requirement of two years of prior membership.

Speaking after a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Thursday, ADC National Chairman, Chief Ralphs Nwosu, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to providing a credible alternative platform for qualified and patriotic Nigerians seeking political office in 2027.

“We have waived the two-year membership requirement for contesting elections or holding party positions. New members can now contest immediately after joining the party,” Nwosu said.

He also confirmed that ADC is preparing for a national convention but will be stepping down as National Chairman, emphasising the need for fresh leadership to drive a corruption-free political movement and mobilize Nigerians effectively.

Addressing speculation about a possible alliance with Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, Nwosu said: “I have not seen Mr Peter Obi in the past year, so we couldn’t have been in talks. However, if he sees what we are doing and decides to join us, our doors are open.”

Nwosu also revealed that ADC is in discussions with the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) and various civil society organizations, emphasizing the need for a collective push toward credible leadership in Nigeria.

Speaking to NEC members, Nwosu stressed the party’s role in reversing the challenges facing the nation, said: “As leaders, we have an important role to play in reversing the deadly malaise that is crippling our nation.

“We must not allow the APC, with their 8 million votes, to overrun this country and derail our democracy. With over 80 million adult Nigerians on our side, we are determined to reclaim our country and position it for greatness.”

He further claimed that more than half of APC’s supposed supporters have pledged to work with ADC once assured of the party’s sincerity.

“The Farmer Club, Justice Group, and Coalition for the Protection of Democracy Movement (COPDEM) have mobilized over 5 million new members into our party in less than two months. Our mobilization teams aim to unite over 50 million Nigerians,” he added.
