The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has dismissed concerns over the defection of some of its members to other political parties, stating that it remains focused on strengthening its membership base ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking to Daily Trust on Thursday, PRP spokesman, Comrade Muhammed Ishaq, said the party’s leadership had no intention of engaging in disputes with those leaving.

“We are a law-abiding political party, and the Nigerian Constitution guarantees the right of citizens to freely associate and join any party of their choice. This is their right, and we have no issue with that,” Ishaq said, declining further comments.

On Wednesday, several former PRP governorship candidates formally resigned from the party and defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Their defection follows an increase in political realignments since former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, left the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the SDP.

Mallam Hayatuddeen Lawal Makarfi, chairman of the PRP gubernatorial candidates’ forum and a leader of the defectors, described their move as historic, positioning the SDP as a platform to “rescue Nigeria from its ‘killers.’”

He emphasised that the 2027 elections should not be a contest between the APC and PDP, but a battle between Nigeria and failure, positioning the SDP as “the last hope of the common man.”
