A special panel of the Court of Appeal has fixed April 8, 2025, to hear an appeal challenging a Federal High Court’s judgment on the local government elections held across Kano State’s 44 LGAs.

The Kano Division of the Court of Appeal transferred the case to the Abuja Division, which constituted the panel to hear and determine the matter.

The Kano State government had approached the appellate court to challenge the Federal High Court’s ruling that halted the October 2024 LG elections, citing the improper constitution of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC).

The appellant argued that the lower court lacked jurisdiction, insisting the case filed by Aminu Aliyu Tiga and the All Progressives Congress (APC) was statute-barred.

Justice Simon Amobeda had, on October 22, 2024, barred KANSIEC from conducting elections until properly constituted.

Unsatisfied, the House of Assembly-which screened and approved the commission’s members-filed an appeal, urging the court to overturn the judgment and affirming that LG elections fall under the state’s purview.

KANSIEC proceeded with the election on October 26, and the elected chairmen and councillors were sworn in the following day.
