The Zamfara State Government has confirmed an outbreak of lead poisoning in the Bungudu Local Government Area.
In a statement issued by the state’s Ministry of Health, Information Officer Suleiman Isa disclosed that Governor Dauda Lawal had directed the immediate deployment of rapid response teams following reports of potential heavy metal exposure.
“Medical teams have been dispatched to Bungudu LGA to assess and treat affected individuals in collaboration with local healthcare facilities and multidisciplinary experts,” the statement said.
Isa also said a team comprising environmental health specialists and medical professionals is investigating the source and extent of the contamination.
He said the government is also engaging community leaders and residents to provide necessary information and support and working closely with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and other national and international partners to address the crisis.
Isa said public health awareness campaigns are being intensified, focusing on hygiene, clean water, and safe environmental practices.
He urged residents experiencing symptoms of heavy metal exposure, such as abdominal pain, headaches, or developmental delays, to seek immediate medical attention.
Zamfara State, a major hub for gold mining, has faced recurring lead poisoning incidents. In 2017, the Emir of Bukkuyum said 300 children in the Yar Galma community lost their lives due to lead exposure.
