A severe rainstorm has forced the shutdown of Akure Airport in Ondo State after causing extensive damage to its control tower and terminal building.
The airport, located in the Eleyewo area of Akure North Local Government, suffered significant structural and operational setbacks due to the storm, which struck late Monday night.
Sources confirmed that the damage has disrupted flight operations, leaving many passengers stranded.
It was gathered that the storm particularly affected the engineering building, where crucial flight operation equipment is housed.
A Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) official, speaking anonymously, confirmed the incident, saying “Commercial flight operations have been suspended indefinitely until repairs are completed. The storm also damaged staff quarters, affecting about seven buildings occupied by airport personnel.”
Efforts to reach Mrs Adebiyi Oluyemisi, the Akure Airport manager, for comments were unsuccessful, as messages sent to her official contact remained undelivered at the time of reporting.
Beyond the airport, the storm caused widespread destruction across several communities in Akure North LGA, damaging a public primary school, churches, residential buildings, and vehicles.
The affected areas-Eleyewo, Ilu Abo, and Bolorunduro-experienced heavy rainfall for over four hours, leading to the destruction of electric poles, shops, and other public infrastructure.
Among the worst-hit structures were LA Primary School, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), and Possibility Church in Ilu Abo, where strong winds ripped off roofs and ceilings.
Residents have been counting their losses, though no casualties have been reported.
