Petrol stations in the federal capital territory have adjusted the pump price of the Premium Motor Spirit, upward from N965 to N990 per litre for outlets owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) and N1,030 for other independent marketers.

The amount is N20 or 2.1 per cent more than the N970 retail price announced by the Dangote Refinery in partnership with MRS filling station, Ardova, and Heyden.

The price increase is  in tandem with the current deregulation of the sector which allows market forces to determine the price of petrol.

Meanwhile, major and independent marketers have increased petrol prices to a peak cost of N1,030 per litre.

Checks by our correspondent showed that filling stations located along Apo and Central Area, as well as Jabi have increased their retail cost between N970 and N1,030 per litre.

The amount represents an increase of N60 or 6.18 per cent from N970 it sold its products last week.

In an interview with a commercial driver in Abuja, Kasimu Atiku revealed that although he had heard about the recent increase in fuel prices at NNPC filling stations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), he was able to purchase fuel at the old rate yesterday.

Atiku stated, “Today (Tuesday) around 1:15pm, I bought fuel for N960 per litre at an NNPC filling station in Gwarimpa.” He added that private filling stations had already been selling fuel above N1,000, even before the price adjustment on Tuesday.

At an NNPCL outlet at Airport Junction in Abuja, our reporter observed a price hike, with fuel now selling at N990 per litre, up from N965 per litre on Monday.

Further checks by our reporter in several filling stations across the Jabi and Utako districts of the FCT revealed that stations such as AA Rano, NIPCO, and Shema have been selling fuel above N1,000, with some prices reaching as high as N1,030.
