The new Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abdullahi Yusuf Ribadu, has taken over the affairs of the commission from the outgoing Acting Executive Secretary, Dr Chris Maiyaki.

Maiyaki handed over to Ribadu on Monday in Abuja at an event with forrmer ES of the commission Prof Julius Okojie, members of the staff of the commission and other special guests.

Prof. Ribadu noted that as the regulatory body that oversees Nigeria’s citadels of learning, NUC must look inwards to determine the relevance or otherwise of its extant laws.

“We will thus revisit the laws that govern our commission and its interactions with other stakeholders with a view to identifying areas of improvement in order to strengthen and reposition it for better service delivery.”

The executive secretary promised to prioritise the training and welfare of the staff, noting that investing in their professional development would yield maximum productivity.

Prof Ribadu is a Nigerian academic and administrator who holds a Ph.D. in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Ibadan.

He has served as the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA), and has received several awards for his contributions to education and research.

His research interests include veterinary medicine, animal health, and public health.

Earlier, Maiyaki in his handover speech identified obsolete law as one of the greatest challenges facing the smooth operation of the commission.
