The recently concluded Bharat Mobility Global Expo may not be any annual affair after all. The government will consult industry associations, such as the Society of Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA), to decide on the frequency of the mega event.

After the success of the Bharat Global Mobility Expo’s inaugural edition last year, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said the expo will be held annually. However, the Department of Commerce’s additional secretary, Rajesh Agrawal, while addressing the media on January 22, the final day of the second edition, did not confirm whether the event will happen next year and said the government would consult associations on making it an annual event.

“We would love to have it annually, but we will be open to suggestions and discussions from all stakeholders because we would like to create a value proposition for everybody,” said Agrawal when asked if it will occur annually or biannually.

Several major auto companies and parts suppliers, such as Bajaj Auto, Honda Cars, Renault, Nissan, Sona Comstar and Lumax Industries, were absent this year. Globally, auto shows have been losing their charm as they are a costly marketing affair, and many do not see merit in participating.

However, the government and industry associations said this year’s Bharat Mobility Global Expo has also turned out to be a huge success with record product launches and footfall. Agarwal said over 9.5 lakh visited the expo till the afternoon of the final day, and nearly 200 products were launched across all the sub-events.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry came forth with the idea of the Bharat Mobility Global Expo to showcase India as a mobility hub by bringing the entire ecosystem on one platform. Major original equipment manufacturers, component makers and companies from allied sectors, such as batteries, charging, steel and tyres, participated in the expo.

Before 2024, the vehicle and component expos were held as two separate events, organised by the SIAM and ACMA, respectively, once every two years. However, last year, both shows were subsumed as sub-events under the Bharat Mobility Global Expo umbrella.

The Auto Expo was held from January 17 to January 22 at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi’s Pragati Maidan, while the Auto Expo Components Show was held between January 18 and January 21 at Yashobhoomi (India International Convention and Expo Centre) in Dwarka in the national capital.

The Bharat Mandapam also hosted the India International Tyre Show, India Cycle Show and Bharat Battery Show, as well as the steel pavilion. The Bharat Construction Equipment Expo and the Urban Mobility & Infrastructure Show were held at the India Expo Centre & Mart in Greater Noida from January 19 to January 22.
