Mandya: The 87th Kannada Sahitya Sammelana in Mandya witnessed controversies as demands for food distribution, including non-vegetarian dishes, sparked debates and unrest. Progressive organizations attempted to distribute food, leading to arguments with the police and a chaotic atmosphere.
Protests against police action
Leaders of progressive organizations sought to serve dishes like boiled eggs, ragi balls, chicken curry, and kebabs at the event. However, the district administration had not granted permission for food distribution. The police intervened, confiscating the containers of non-vegetarian food. This action angered the protestors, who raised slogans against the police.
Non-Vegetarian food served despite restrictions
Despite police efforts to dissuade the protestors, the organizers were adamant. Eventually, they moved the distribution to a location away from the main venue. The police imposed a condition that food could be consumed but not distributed to the public at the event site. Attendees flocked to the food distribution area, resulting in a rush and commotion.
Discontent among literature enthusiasts
Literature enthusiasts expressed disappointment over the incident, stating that the Sahitya Sammelana is a platform for discussions on literature and language, not food-related disputes. “Serving food, especially non-vegetarian dishes, was unnecessary. This is not the place for such activities. Many attendees were content with vegetarian meals. Managing the distribution of non-vegetarian food would have been challenging,” said a participant.
