Mumbai: In a shocking incident, a woman was arrested in South Mumbai for creating multiple fake accounts of a doctor and posting obscene photos to harass and defame him on social media. The incident came to light on February 18 when the doctor got to know from a female friend that she had received a friend request from an account pretending to be him.

The D B Marg police arrested a 25-year-old woman for creating several fake Instagram accounts using a doctor's identity. According to a report by the Indian Express, the police stated that "the woman had been in a relationship with the doctor. When he began to ignore her, she sought to teach him a lesson, which led her to commit this offence".

The doctor filed a complaint at the police station under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. During the investigation, the police discovered that the accused had created multiple accounts using the same name. By tracking the IP address, they found that she resided in South Mumbai. A team was dispatched to her address, where she was arrested by the police. During questioning, she explained that she had been in a relationship with the doctor and had done this to take revenge.

Statements by authorities

“The woman was brought to the police station for questioning, during which she confessed to the crime. She alleged that she had been dating the doctor for some time, but recently he had started ignoring her. As she wanted to teach him a lesson, she created multiple Instagram accounts and posted his morphed pictures to harass him,” said senior police inspector Sanjay Gaikwad as per reports.

“We are investigating whether the woman has created fake accounts on other social media platforms using the same method. The SIM card used to commit the crime is registered in someone else’s name, so we are trying to determine if anyone else is involved in the crime,” an officer said.
