Mumbai, March 16, 2025: Residents of St Alexius Road in Mumbai's Bandra (West) are facing severe difficulties as an ongoing road construction project has remained incomplete allegedly for the past four months. The road which is located in one of Mumbai’s prime localities was dug up for infrastructural work, but construction appears to have been abandoned, leaving residents frustrated and concerned about their daily commute and health risks.

Daily Struggles for Commuters and Emergency Services

With roads dug up for concretisation and repairs across Mumbai, Mumbaikars are already dealing with major commuting challenges. However, for those living on St Alexius Road, the issue has been prolonged and worse due to the stalled construction. Locals report that:

Daily commutes to work and hospitals have become difficult.

Emergency services, including ambulances, struggle to access the area.

Only two workers were seen working on the road today, suggesting a slow or halted pace of work.

A resident took to social media to raise concerns, tagging the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and local authorities. "Today there were two workers working on this stretch of road. @mybmc please have someone inspect St Alexius Road, Bandra West. It’s been 4 months since the road work started. And now it’s infested with mosquitoes. I suspect the sewage line has broken. Pls help us," the complaint read.

Health Hazard Due to Mosquito Infestation

Apart from mobility issues, residents are now facing an alarming increase in mosquitoes, raising fears of vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria.

One resident tweeted, "Please take a look at St Alexius Road, Bandra West @mybmc @ShelarAshish It is a health hazard. 4 months of road work, and now a surge of mosquitoes & a health menace. This is scary and needs to be seen to urgently."

The resident also said in another tweet, "Dear @mybmc It’s been four months since the road work started at St Alexius Road, in Bandra. We have been patient and watched more ‘important’ roads get started & completed. But now this is what our road looks like, and our lane and homes are now filled with mosquitoes."

Appeal for Immediate Action

Despite their patience, residents feel neglected as other road projects in the city have started and finished while their neighbourhood remains in disrepair. Frustrated locals continue to urge BMC and city officials to inspect the site and take swift action to complete the project.

Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad took cognizance and raised the issue on her official social media account asking BMC the reason behind the delay. She said, "Digging taken up but work almost abandoned midway, loose debris lying around, construction material on footpaths! This is the condition of St. John Baptist road in Bandra. Navigating this road has become difficult for many of the children and senior citizens who live here. This road had a bus stop but thanks to the road being dug up, the route has been diverted, making it all the more difficult for people to travel out of here @IYC_Mumbai Working President @ParvezShaikh_23 audited this road. The @mybmc must answer, why this inordinate delay in completing the work? Who is the contractor here? Why have they not been pulled up for this? We will be following this up with the BMC with a formal complaint."
